Learning Questions

1)May I know what is the meaning of "independent variable" & "dependant variable" ?

An independent variable is a factor that can be varied or manipulated in an experiment (e.g. time, temperature, concentration, etc). It is usually what will affect the dependent variable.

In your science experiments, you will always be controlling the independent variable and measuring the effect it has on the dependent variable.

For example, if you want to find out if plants require water to grow, the factors you will control is the amount of water given each day. So water will be the independent variable. The dependent variable will then be the observed amount of growth of the plant.

2)What is the difference between the properties & the charateristics of something?

According to the Longman Dictionary,
Characteristics refer to a quality or feature of someone/something that is typical of them and is easy to recognise.

Properties refer to a quality that belongs naturally to something. [In this case, it might be something that you cannot see, eg healing power]

3)When we say that something has definite volume, does it means that it cannot be compressed?

At your level, this is what you know. As long as an object has definite volume (liquids/solids), it cannot be compressed. This leaves us with only gases (compressable).

7th Oct 2010: P4 Science Practice Paper

Updated on: 11/10/2010
Townsville Primary School Practice Paper 1 (P4) - Given on 7th Oct 2010
Booklet B

Q31) a: (i) Solid
(ii) Liquid
(iii) Gas
b: Any Liquid (as long as it is matter)

Q32) a: The stone takes up space/ it has volume. [I do not accept mass]
b: 10 ml
c: 45 ml [0.5 marks will be deducted if units are not stated]

Q33) a: Noel is wrong. Sound does not have mass OR volume OR occupy space.
b: Any solid

Q34) a: The water is cold.
b: The water is hot.
C: The hot water heats the air in the bottle (0.5m) and causes the air to expand (0.5m).

Q35) a: Ronald added ice/ put it in the freezer. Must add something cold, not blowing/ stirring etc.
B: The water has become ice/ frozen/ changing to ice.
C: He heated the water/ added hot water. The water must gain heat.

Q36) a: Vase Y is made up if a material that does not allow light to pass through it while Vase Z is made of a material that allows some light to pass through it. [Must compare both vases, 0m if only vase Z is mention, 0.5m if only vase Y is mentioned.]
B: Vase Y

Q37) a: Move the wooden cube nearer to the screen/ the screen nearer to the cube/ move the light further away from the cube.
B: Glass

Q38) a: Plant Y
B: The plant has sunlight to make food (0.5m) because light can pass through the box (0.5m). [Both points are important!]
C: The material/ kind/ type of box.

Q39) a: Part A – Flower, Part B – Leaf
B: Part C holds the plant upright while Part D holds the plant firmly to the ground OR
Part C transports water to all parts of the plant while Part D absorbs water from the soil.
[Must compare according to similar function]
c: Part A ensures the continual reproduction of the plant OR Part B helps the plant make food.

[Both answers are accepted as long as the important function is listed. Answer in the negative will not be accept. For Eg, If part A is missing…. ]

Q40) a: Plant A does not have much roots to absorb water and nutrients for the plant to grow well. [Must show cause & effect]
B: The roots are not able to hold the plant firmly/well to the ground. [without firmly/well, 1m will be deducted]

Q41) a: Mouth: The saliva has digestive juices to start digestion
Gullet: The muscle help pushes the food from the mouth into the stomach
B: Small intestines: Digestion of food continues and is completed here OR
Digested food is absorbed into the body

Q42) a: Stomach
B: More digestive juices are added/ Digestion of food.

Q43) a: Material A or B, Please state relevant characteristics.
B: No, it is not flexible/ cannot be bent.

Q44) a: D
B: Any mammal that cannot fly and has hair on its body (except Bat).

Remarks:
Mistakes were generally on
Q34c: Students did not explain what causes the air to expand - the heat from the hot water,
Q35b: Qn was asking what happened to the water, [I do not accept the answer "The temperature has dropped to 0 deg". The temperature has in fact remained at 0 degrees.]
36a: Comparison was not made,
37a: Concept of making shadows was unclear - For sharper images, light source has to be further away from object, but the object has to be nearer to the screen,
39b: Comparison of functions does not match, For eg: Part C holds the plant upright while Part D adsorbs water.
